There are two formats of IELTS- International English Language Testing System. One is Academic and the other is general Training. Academic is basically for Education purpose and General Training is for working, immigration or professional activities.
Here, we are going to discuss IELTS Writing Task 1 for the General Training Module. There are two tasks in the writing section. Task 1 is an informal, formal or semi-formal letter with a minimum of 150 words. You are supposed to be spent 20 minutes for task 1 and the remaining 40 minutes for Task 2. On the contrary, task 2 is a descriptive or argumentative (essay) writing, where we have to write an essay for at least 250 words.
For task 1, first of all, you should consider what types of letters you are going to write. Formal, semi-formal or informal.
Formal Letter: A formal letter encompass many things and is related to the business letter. Suppose, you are going to write a letter to your employer, bank or boss. In that case, your writing should be formal and start with proper salutation or greetings. For example:
Dear Sir, Dear Madam, etc. and for ending greetings you may use Sincerely, Sincerely yours, etc.
Semi-formal Letter: It is a type of letter usually being sent to people we do not know very well or in situations that require a more polite and respectful approach. In a word, a letter written in a more polite tone than informal letters is considered a semi-formal letter. Greetings should be like Dear Smith, always try to use the last name if you know the recipient, do not start with Dear Sir, Dear Madam and ending should be Regards, Best Regards, Best Wishes, etc.
Informal Letter: Finally, an informal letter is such type of letter you would like to write to a friend, a family member or an acquaintance. Opening greetings for an informal letter like Dear Jhon and for ending, greetings will be like Best wishes, Best, Kindly, Kind regards, Best regards, Lots of love, etc.
Here is an example of a Semi-formal letter
You and your family are moving to another country, and you are looking for rented accommodation there.
Now, write a letter to a property agent. In your letter
I am writing to ask for your help to finding accommodation in the UK.
My name is Will Smith, and I am married with two young children. A recent promotion at work has meant that I will soon be based in London instead of Dhaka, Bangladesh and so we are hoping to emigrate as soon as possible.
Our plan is to find rented accommodation for at least the first year of our stay in the UK. Ideally, we would like a detached house with three or four bedrooms and a good-sized garden so that the children have somewhere to run around.
We would prefer a quiet, suburban location within easy commuting distance of the city center. The local schools are an important consideration, and we would like to be close to shops and other amenities.
I hope you can help us with our house search and, I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
William Smith
Note: No need to mention your address as per the IELTS exam rules.
